EMDR vs. ART Therapy: What’s the Difference—and How Can They Help?
If you’ve started exploring trauma therapy or anxiety treatment, you may have come across two approaches that are becoming increasingly popular: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). At Next Adventure Counseling & Consulting, many of our therapists are trained in trauma-informed approaches, including both EMDR and ART, to help clients process difficult experiences and move toward healing.
While EMDR and ART have similarities, they also have important differences. The good news? Both therapies are highly effective for many people struggling with trauma, anxiety, stress, grief, or overwhelming life experiences.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR therapy is an evidence-based treatment designed to help people process traumatic memories and reduce the emotional distress connected to them. During EMDR sessions, clients briefly focus on difficult memories while also engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements.
Over time, EMDR can help the brain “reprocess” traumatic experiences so they feel less overwhelming and emotionally charged.
EMDR is commonly used to support people experiencing:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and panic attacks
Depression
Grief and loss
Childhood trauma
Relationship trauma
Performance anxiety
Negative self-beliefs
Many people appreciate EMDR because it does not require clients to talk through every detail of a traumatic experience extensively.
What Is ART Therapy?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is another evidence-based trauma therapy that uses eye movements and visualization techniques to help clients process distressing experiences. ART is often known for being structured, efficient, and focused on helping clients experience relief more quickly.
One unique feature of ART is its use of “Voluntary Image Replacement,” which allows clients to change how distressing images or memories are experienced in the brain.
ART may help with:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and stress
Phobias
Grief
Sleep difficulties and nightmares
Relationship issues
Burnout
Emotional overwhelm
Many clients report feeling calmer, lighter, and less emotionally reactive after ART sessions.
Similarities Between EMDR and ART
Both EMDR and ART:
Are evidence-based trauma therapies
Use bilateral eye movements
Help the brain process distressing experiences differently
Can reduce emotional intensity connected to memories
Often work faster than traditional talk therapy alone
Are effective for trauma, anxiety, stress, and emotional healing
Both approaches are designed to help clients move forward without feeling “stuck” in painful experiences.
Key Differences Between EMDR and ART
While the therapies are similar in some ways, the overall structure and experience can feel different.
EMDR Often:
Follows a multi-phase treatment process
Allows memories to unfold more organically
May involve more gradual processing over time
Focuses heavily on reprocessing beliefs, emotions, and body sensations
ART Often:
Is more structured and directive
Focuses on changing distressing imagery quickly
May feel faster-paced for some clients
Emphasizes creating relief and resolution efficiently
Neither approach is “better” than the other. The best therapy depends on your goals, comfort level, and personal preferences.
Which Therapy Is Right for Me?
Every person’s healing journey is different. Some people connect more with EMDR, while others prefer the structure and pacing of ART. In many cases, both therapies can be highly effective.
At Next Adventure Counseling & Consulting, our therapists work collaboratively with clients to determine the best approach based on their needs, goals, and experiences. Whether you are navigating trauma, anxiety, life transitions, or emotional stress, you do not have to figure it out alone.
