Why Social Media “Streaks” Can Feel So Stressful

I was recently featured in the Star Tribune by journalist Karen Tolkkinen to discuss the growing stress people feel from social media “streaks.” One example in the article described a teen who asked his mom to log into his Snapchat account every day of their Boundary Waters trip—just to keep his 746-day streak alive.

This might sound extreme, but it’s actually very common. Social media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok are designed to keep us hooked by rewarding us with daily “wins” that feel hard to let go of.

The Psychology Behind Streaks

As I shared in the article, streaks work because they activate our brain’s dopamine response system—delivering little hits of approval that feel like small victories. Over time, breaking a streak can feel like a genuine loss, even though the number itself has no real meaning.

That’s why many people experience anxiety, stress, or pressure around streaks. But here’s the truth: the streak itself doesn’t hold value—you do. What matters most is your relationships, your sense of accomplishment, and your overall mental health and well-being—not the number on your screen.

How to Take Back Control of Social Media Use

If you find yourself feeling stressed about streaks or other social media habits, here are a few things to try:

  • Ask yourself: “Do I really want to do this right now?” instead of “I have to keep this going.”

  • Experiment with missing a day on purpose and notice what actually changes (hint: your relationships and your worth stay the same).

  • Set boundaries around your technology use so you’re in control, not the app.

The goal isn’t necessarily to quit social media altogether—it’s about making sure streaks and apps fit into your life in a healthy way.
